For future reference - the thing that was different about the image that was "unsupported" was the alpha channel:
  Channel depth:
    red: 8-bit
    green: 8-bit
    blue: 8-bit
    alpha: 1-bit

Using ImageMagick convert to turn the alpha channel off made the image work properly.
