[xep-support] making an image an external link

i'm trying to make an image a link to an external document, but each
attempt only makes the bottom "line-height" portion of the image an
active link. i've looked through the archives and seen this topic
discussed, so i understand that the "line-height" behaviour is the 
correct one, however i would like to know if it is possible to make the 
entire image an active link. anyone have a workaround to make this 
happen? any info appreciated. thanks,
