Thanks Kevin. I've managed to do it using SVG so this one can be closed off.

I was already using SVG to create the chart (see attached image) and I was trying to put the labels around it using xsl:fo but it occurred to me it would be easier in SVG anyway and that turned out to be the case.

Only through manipulation of the intermediate format after the content formatting is calculated.

Pot more about what you are trying to do and possibly we can show you have to accomplish it.

Is there a way of applying an arbitrary rotation to text? I have found reference-orientation but it only allows 90, 180, 270.
