[xep-support] background image on title page

Hello,
I have been using XEP for years now and it just works. I have only a couple
of times before had a need to write.
Now I have a question that I hope someone can help me with. I want to have
a background image on my book title page (the first page of the PDF).
I also want to have the image go out to the edge of the page.
I thought I could do something like...
    <xsl:template name="book.titlepage.recto">
        <fo:block margin-left="-2.3cm" margin-top="-2.6cm"
background-image="images/TitlePageBackground.pdf">
            <fo:table>
                <fo:table-body>
                    . . .
                </fo:table-body>
            </fo:table>
        </fo:block>
    </xsl:template>
But that doesn't seem to work.
Unfortunately, I have almost no knowledge of the title page templates, etc.
If anyone can lead in the right direction, I would be grateful!
