Thanks for your reply Bob, this is very helpful. Is it a custom made
search and replace template? I saw a reference on the DocBook XSL page
to ulink.hyphenate and I was trying to see if there was a simpler
solution, but if it comes down to search and destroy, I can do that :).

The DocBook XSL stylesheets have an option to filter URL strings to
insert either a soft hyphen or a zero-width space in the FO output after
each character you designate, such as slash. Then the formatter can
break it as needed.
