[xep-support] Chinese characters in PDF bookmarks

I'm experiencing a strange problem with a Chinese translation.  The PDF 
bookmarks properly display Chinese and English characters when the 
rx:bookmark-label text starts with a Chinese character.  When the label 
text starts with a non-Chinese character (even just a number digit) but 
contains Chinese characters, the Chinese characters display as empty boxes. 
It seems the display font is selected based on the first character, but 
cannot switch after it starts.  Is that a bug?  If it is a feature, how do 
I turn it off?
