Any one have any idea why this works

But this fails?

src="url('http://intra.????.ac.nz/xml/icons/7_reading.pdf')" />

[error] Failed to create image
http://intra.????.ac.nz/xml/icons/7_reading.pdf of type application/pdf
        [error] java.io.IOException: Broken PDF file!
java.lang.ClassCastException


I've checked the link in the browser and it looks fine.
