The intermediate format is documented in XEP documentation:

I successfully used XSLT on intermediate format to split set of invoices 
into individual PDFs for my client. You must utilize rx:pinpoint or 
processing instructions in page master to propagate information about 
start of a new chapter into FO and then into intermediate format.
