[xep-support] java.lang.NullPointerException when using PDF's as images

Hi
I am using the Multivalent Split Tool (http://www.cs.berkeley.edu/~phelps/Multivalent/ )to pre-process multipage PDF files for inclusion as single page images. Some files, although they view correctly in Acrobat6 cause XEP to dump with a java.lang.NullPointerException. Saving the file extracted from the original PDF by Multivalent with Acrobat removes the problem. Does anybody know whether this errant behavior can be attributed to XEP or whether Multivalent writes files in a non-standard way?

Any help much appreciated.
