[xep-support] Question about footnotes

I need to output PDFs that contain a large number of footnotes. The
particular format that the business people want to use is a layout with two
parallel columns, one for the body text, one for the footnotes. The
footnotes should align with the body text.

Is this permitted by the standard? And would this be possible using XEP? If
so, what version would be able to do this. I am currently using 2.77.

If this is not possible, is there an alternative that would allow for
parallel content?
