There is a document describing how to embed XEP in a Java application, and
even some text about how to write extensions to XEP in Java. It's a bit
brief and over my level, but between experienced Java programmers it's
probably useful.

Did you find the tutorial in the /doc directory? Just cut and paste
the code into your text editor, run and see it working. The tutorial teaches
you the basics quickly, much quicker than any book would do. After reading
it, you are prepared to look up things in the specification.
Maybe there should be a step by step introduction for beginners on how to
run the first example, something like "The first cup of Java" in the Java
tutorial? For those with little or no programming experience I think XEP may
be tough to get started with.
