Derek,

Actually, you have to choices: convert the not-yet supported formats
to a supported one (PNG,GIF,TIFF rgb,Jpeg) or write your own image
format handler and extend backends to output it. The latter is more
difficult, I think.

Better handling of image formats is one of the tasks scheduled for the
next release.
